SOMETIME is designed to help us get past some common obstacles through a few simple steps. It seeks to create a space for joining others in their spiritual and life journey.
Lindsey is a young, single mother who showed up at church one Sunday. I introduced myself and asked what brought her there. She shared that her son had been asking questions about God and she didn’t have answers. She explained that she made a deal with God…if He got her to a work meeting on time, she would go to church. After talking for a while, I asked if she’d like to get together SomeTime to hear more of her story.
We met the next week. After sharing the gospel in that second conversation, Lindsey accepted Christ as her Savior and we’ve been meeting weekly for about 5 months exploring the foundations of the faith. She is seeing how the gospel is good news in her struggle with anxiety, unforgiveness, and single parenthood. She is asking amazing questions, getting into Scripture, and taking joyful steps of obedience every week. Her life is truly being transformed!
Dasha & I were helping tutor kids’ reading at the same elementary school. As we got to know each other, she told me that she lacked hope and purpose in her life. I began to think she might benefit from hearing my story.
I asked her if we could have breakfast SomeTime and talk some more about her journey. We met the next Saturday at ihop. As we ate, I listened and had an opportunity to share the gospel.
She interrupted several times, “Really, that actually happened?” and “God really did that for me?” She told me she wanted to know God and said, “I think I need to do that right now.” We went to my car and she prayed to receive Christ right there! She went from being my friend to being my sister in Christ!
Tim is a highly educated accountant. He was dating a girl who was in our marathon training program, so he joined a faster pace group. They had a rocky relationship, and when it fell apart, I saw Tim early one Saturday morning for the long run. I told him, I’d love to get lunch with him SomeTime, to get to know him better and learn about his spiritual journey.
He agreed, so when we met at Pho 66 near his office, the question, "tell me about your spiritual journey" was expected. After he told me his story, I asked if I could show him something that made a lot of sense to me. He was deeply engaged in the gospel that day he accepted Christ into his life. Later he mapped out a plan to talk with his son, Henry, and Henry’s mom.
Let me tell you about how I met Alex. Some college students at my church invited me to go on a prayer walk with them at their campus. I and another student walked around the campus praying for the people we saw and those in the buildings we passed. We stopped to ask a couple of people if we could pray for them.
Just as we were wrapping up and meeting with the other students I saw a guy walking toward us and felt a little nudge in my heart that I should ask him if I could pray for him. His name is Alex and he was really happy to share a prayer request, and he let me pray for him right there. I introduced him to the students, and asked if I could hang out with him SomeTime on campus to hear more about his spiritual journey.
He enthusiastically agreed, and he, and I, and another student who I am discipling met for a chat the following week. He was eager to share his experiences with Church and God with us, and admitted that though he had put his faith in Jesus as a teen he was not living in a way that is pleasing to God at all. We were able to lead him in a prayer of rededication and repentance right there outside the student center of his campus.
“The brokenness and abuse of the home I grew up in made me very fearful and lonely, but when I understood that Christ invites me in to God’s family that helped me to overcome my painful past and gave me power to forgive my father.”
“Because my dad died when I was young, I grew up with a lot of fear and insecurity about my future. But when I understood that God promised a future of hope through a relationship with him, I found confidence that God had a purpose for me despite the uncertainties of life.”
“I noticed I was only putting things in my life that only postponed my emptiness. I pursued the concept of truth, read the NT. I discovered my concept of God was completely wrong. He wants a relationship. I’ve been gladly following Him since then, feel like I’m moving toward abundance.”
"I was insecure and looked for significance and approval in achievement and relationships. After I understood that Jesus loved me so much that He would die in my place I found confidence in Him which fulfills me infinitely better than anything else.”

Ministry to neighbors isn't a spiritual growth project we can finish in a month or two. Relationships are essential, and those relationships will cost us valuable time and energy. Let's remember what Jesus said in Mark 12:31: "Love your neighbor as yourself." What if Jesus meant we should love our actual neighbors?
